Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kawasaki engine backfires, kawasaki engine, starter fluid

Question
I have a Kawasaki FC420V -DS00 Engine exh.backfires when trying to start cold or hot .I have checked flywheel key, been over carb, adj.valves and new spark plug. Has 91 compression . Do you have any idea? Runs great after starts just backfires, turns over a while before starting on backfire.

Answer
Hello Randal:

From your Description it Sounds like a Carburetor Problem. Since it Does this when Cold, I Suggest you try Using a Gas Soaked Rag and Hold it Over the Intake while you are Starting the Engine. If the Engine Starts, then the Carburetor Choke Port is Restricted and Not Allowing the Engine Enough Gas for a Cold Start. If you Use Starter Fluid, then Make Sure the Engine is Turning Before you Shoot a Short Spray Into the Carburetor Intake. A Cold Engine Require More Gas to Start than when Warm. Improper Gas will cause the Engine to Backfire as you Described. You can View a Breakdown of the Engine at this Site Addy; http://www.buykawpower.com/kmcb2c/main.jsp and Select View Parts Catalog. Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
