Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs V-Twin, briggs stratton, hp engine

Question
Hiya,
Well, I just purchased a used 35hp Briggs & Stratton V-Twin offline. I have a hobby of making go-karts, and this is the biggest "small" engine I've ever seen. I believe that it is the biggest made by briggs...and I have already made a frame for it. I'm afraid that I can't supply you with a model number, as most of the cowling and the OHV valve covers had been removed when I got it. I asked the original owner for them, and he looked for them without any luck. I had to buy some second-hand, and they are made for a 24-hp engine, so they might not be much help. The engine is electric-start, but even after carefully cleaning all the fuel lines and the carb, and replacing the head crankcase gaskets, AND replacing the oil sensor and damaged cam and rods, this engine just won't start! It has spark, fuel and plenty of compression, but for some reason, it won't run. It tries, and will run rough for a few minutes, but then promptly shut down. I payed $500 for this engine, and will not give it up. There appears to be no mechanical damage anymore after the replacement parts, and the engine is well-balanced and when it does attempt an idle I can tell both cylinders are firing. Do you have any guesses? It's almost Christmas, and I was hoping to give this go-kart to my 14-year-old son, Andrew. He loves engineering and anything to do with engines and cars, and this would be his first motorized vehicle of his own. Please help me!

Answer
Hello Scott:

This Site Addy May Assist in Identifying the Engine Other than Using the http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/BS_modeltypecode.pdf . 1- However, have you Checked the Carburetor Solenoid? The Following is a Basic Instruction File I made for Checking the Carburetor Solenoid. Any Input is Appreciated. **Check for Current/Voltage (10.5 VDC Minimum) to the Carburetor Shut Off Solenoid. If the Carburetor Shut Off Solenoid has Current, then On Some Solenoids you can Remove the Needle and Replace the Solenoid to Test them. ****PLEASE DO NOT OPERATE THE MOWER WITH THE SOLENOID BYPASSED IN THIS MANNER. THIS IS "ONLY" FOR TESTING.**** For Others, Remove the Carburetor Solenoid and Go to the Hardware Store. Purchase a Bolt of the Same Diameter and Threads. It Needs to be 1/2" to 3/4" Long for the Horizontal Mount Solenoids and 1/4" Long for the Vertical Mount Solenoids. Put this Bolt in Place of the Solenoid. If this Corrects the Engine Problem, then Replace the Solenoid. ***NOTE: THIS IS FOR CHECKING THE SOLENOID ONLY I NEVER SUGGEST YOU OPERATE THE ENGINE WITH THE SOLENOID OUT OF THE CARBURETOR EXCEPT FOR TESTING PURPOSES*** Sometimes the Plunger is Moving, Just Not Far Enough to Allow the Gas to Enter the Jet.** 2- Did you have the Pistons Out of the Block? If Yes, Did you De-glaze the Cylinder when you Rebuilt this Engine? Have you Checked the Flywheel Key? Did you Replace the Spring Style Hose Clamps with Screw Style Clamps? If No, then there May be a Vacuum Leak to the Fuel Pump and this will Cause the Problem. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
