Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Toro gas trimmer with no spark, visible cracks, wire tie

Question
Trimmer has had issues since day 1 - model #51972 - There is no spark - spark plug is good. Had it worked on and told it was bad gas - it is NOT bad gas as problem is recurring after limited use.  Very few hours on machine as it will never run!  Thank you for any troubleshooting!

Answer
How do you mean never run?  Will it start and idle?  Will it run at full throttle?  When you say not bad gas, how old is the gas?  If you go to  https://homeownersolutions.toro.com/portal/server.pt?space=CommunityPage&cached=true&parentname=CommunityPage&parentid=1&in_hi_userid=19462&control=SetCommunity&CommunityID=214&PageID=238#manualsResultPage  website you will be able to download the owners manual.  There is a good troubleshooting section in the back.

If the engine will start but not stay running you more than likely have a fuel issue, (not getting enough to keep it running or flooding it out).  If it will not even pop you more than likely electrical issue.

If the plug is getting wet with fuel check for spark.  Take the spark plug out and lay it against the cylinder.  Turn it on and pull the rope.  There should be a spark at the gap.  If none check the on/off switch with a continuity meter.  Inspect the plug for visible cracks and if none the electronic ignition coil needs to be replaced.

If there is spark is the plug getting wet with fuel?  If not the main nozzle is blocked in the carburetor, fuel filter is plugged, fuel line is pinched or internal screen in the carburetor is dirty.    To clean inside the carburetor you have to remove it and take it apart.  Once is is apart clean all air and fuel passages with the wire from a wire tie.  Blow out with calibrator cleaner or compressed air.  Depending on the carburetor there should be a small screen inside it.  (Parts manuals are not on line)  Clean it.  Reassemble with a new carb kit and mounting gaskets.  Take a look at the insulator block between the engine and the carburetor.  Be sure it is not wrapped.  Clean the tank and cap vent.  Be sure to back flush the outlet of the tank.  Be sure there is fuel flowing to the carb.  Remove the spark arrestor from the muffler and clean it out.  It is a screen over the muffler outlet. DO THIS FIRTS.
