Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs-Stratton engine, cylinder head bolts, briggs stratton engine

Question
I recently replaced the piston rod in an 8 hp engine model 195432 type 0881. I twisted a couple of head screws off and replaced them.  Is there a specific sequence to torque down the head screws and if there is, where would the sequence start?  I cranked the engine before putting it back on my shrededer/chipper and had exhaust leak on one cornor of the head.  Thanks   James

Answer
Hi James,

The Briggs & Stratton maintenance manual I am looking at says

"Tighten the cylinder head bolts in increments using a torque wrench.  Turn each bolt a few turns, then proceed to the next bolt until each bolt is snug.  For final tightening use a torque wrench.  Proceed in increments  of one third (roughly) of the final torque. Consult your owner's manual for the final torque sequence and specifications."

If you don't have the original owners manual then I would suggest contacting Briggs & Stratton.  The website address is www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair.

I think if you follow the instructions you should be fine.
