Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): stuck MTD transmission, hydrostatic transaxle, speed transaxle

Question
QUESTION: I have a lawn tractor that I cannot get out of gear. it is an older MTD with a Hydromatic transmission. I recentl;y found this at an estate sale a few blocks from myhouse and out it in neutural and pushed it home (it would not start) I got it home and put it in forward. I went out the next day and it will not go into neutural now. it seems to feel like the selector is working, but the wheels lock up when you try to push it. the slider is moving on the transmission, but it does not seem to do anything. any ideas where to start? I'm not sure of the model, but E119C is on the sticker behind the seat. it is an older model. any help would be greatly appreciated.

ANSWER: Hello Michael:

On the Transaxle is an OEM Identification Plate. Send me the Information Off of This Plate, Please. With this Information, I can Locate the Proper Manuals and Better Assist You. Thanks.

QUESTION: the only numbers I saw on the transaxle were stamped into the metal, the numbers were: MTD 717-761. On the sticker behind the seat, ther was another number that was 139-658-046. I hope this helps.

Answer
Hello Again Michael:

Thanks for the Transaxle and Model Numbers Model Numbers. They are a Great Help. According to the Manual and the Online Breakdown, this Unit has a Single Speed Transaxle and a Variable Speed Pulley that Controls the Ground. This is Not a Hydromatic or Hydrostatic Transaxle. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Unit at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM (MTD) and Enter the Model Numbers (139-658-046). Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Unit you Wish to View. Select the 2nd "Parts" Section Listed. This Shows the Linkage. Then Select the 1st "Parts" Section to View the Variable Speed Pulley and the Variable Speed Pulley Bracket Assembly. I Suggest you Check the Linkage for Binding/Sticking and then Check the Variable Speed Pulley and Bracket Assembly for Sticking/Binding. On the Variable Speed Pulley, Check the Floating Sheave. Remove the Belt and Make Sure the Floating Sheave is Moving Freely. If Not the Spray with PB Rust Catalyst and then Carefully Work the Sheave until it Moves Freely. Then Clean the PR from the Pulley and Sheaves. Now Lightly Lubricate the Center Shaft of the Variable Speed Pulley and Replace the Belt. A Lot of People Mistook this Style Drive System as a Hydro because of the Way the Ground Speed is Regulated. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
