Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Govenor Spring Adjustment, engine tachometer, 2 nuts

Question
Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Govenor Spring Adjustment, engine tachometer, 2 nuts
Governor spring adjust
QUESTION: I have an Onan P220G-I/1114H Serial#H037532019 The Adjusting rod and spring were removed from this engine and I am trying to find out which hole to hook the spring into on the governor arm and how much tension to put on the spring with the 2 nuts on the adjusting rod. I have attached an image of the parts drawing and parts are numbered 11 and 43.  I thank you for any advice you can give.

ANSWER: Hello Randy:

Thanks for the Picture. The Nuts are for Setting the Engines Governed Speed. Once the Engine is Started, you Set the Engine Speed to 2800 to 3200 RPMs. This Requires a Small Engine Tachometer. The Governor Spring Usually Attaches to the Governor Arm or the Governor Arm Actuator in the Hole Furthermost from the Governor Shaft. There should be Wear Marks Around the Inside and Edges of the Hole where the Spring was Originally Connected.  If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

QUESTION: OK but I don't understand why I should set the RPM at 2800 - 3200 I thought that engines of this size ran 3600 RPM max.  I will receive the spring and rod on Wed and will install ASAP after that. I will let you know how it turns out.
God bless you!! You provide a great service to those of us who need a little ( or a lot ) of help.

Answer
Hello Again Randy:

Thanks for the Comments and Ratings. The Reason I Use the 3200 RPMs is Due to the Fact that Most Small Engine Tachometers are a Little Off even if they are New. I would Rather have my Engines Last Longer and Not have to Worry that the Engine is Over Revving when the Governor Allows the Engine to Speed up when an Extra Load is Placed on the Engine. It the Full Throttle RPMs are Set to the Max RPMs of the Engine, then when the Governor Regulates the Engine, Most Times the Engine will Over Rev Slightly before the Governor Pulls the Engine Back to the Governed RPMs. If you Feel Confident, then by All means you can Set the Engine to 3600 RPMs. I Hope this Explains the Discrepancy. Thanks. Till Next Time. May All Your Mechanical Problems be SMALL ONES and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks Again.

Best Wishes and Good Luck
