Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): mcculloch chainsaw 3516 stalling, nd line, hello john

Question
John, my 3516 with start with a couple pumps of the prime bulb, but dies immediately after it starts.  I've tried everything you suggest: cleaning carb, removing exhaust and spark arrestor, fresh gas with fuel additive, etc.  Nothing seems to work.  It's as if the carburetor is starved for fuel.  I've even removed fuel filter without success.  I noticed there are two tubes in the fuel tank -- one with a filter, one without.  Can you help me understand what each is?  I assume the one with the filter is for drawing gas to carb.  Appreciate any help you can offer.

John

Answer
Hello John:

McCulloch Uses the UT Numbers for a Model. The 3516 is the Series Model. The UT Numbers for this Saw should be; 11-600035-50 (or 53, 54, 57 or 59). I Used the UT 11-600035-53 for a Reference. You can View a Breakdown of this Unit at this Site Addy;
http://www.ordertree.com/cms/parts-lookup-help/73.html and Select the OEM (McCullough) and Enter the Model Number and Click Go. If No Results, then Select the Click Here for Help. Now Scroll through the Units Listed and Locate your Model. Then Select your Model. Now Select View Breakdown and View the Breakdown/IPL. When you Cleaned the Carburetor, did you Set the Metering Needle? I Require the OEM (Walbro, Zama, ect) and the Model Numbers Off the Carburetor. With these I can Locate a Breakdown of the Carburetor and Better Assist you. What is the Compression of this Unit? The 2 Lines in the Tank are; 1- the One with the Filter is the Fuel Supply Line. 2- the @nd Line is the Fuel Return Line. Have you Checked the Jug/Cylinder Bolts? Are they Tight? Did you Soak the Carburetor when you Cleaned it? If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck

Hi Again John:

I forgot to Ask, How are the Air Mixture Screws Set? The Following is the Instruction File for Setting the Air Mixture Screws. Any Input is Appreciated. The Procedure is the Same for 1 or 2 Mixture Screws, Just Use the Instruction File and Skip Over the Section with the Missing Mixture Screw. Now Setting the Air Mixture Screws:  ****Turn the Idle Air (L) and Main Air (H) Mixture Screws In Until SNUG **Do Not Jam** Then Reverse Both Screws 1 1/2 Turns. Set the Throttle Full Open, Start the Engine. Turn the Main Air (H) Mixture Screw Clockwise Until Proper Revs are Obtained. Occasionally you May have to Turn this Counter Clockwise to Achieve the Proper Revs. Now Allow the Engine to Idle. Set the Engine Idle Screw (Not Idle Air) so the Engine will Stay Running if Required. Now Set the Idle Air (L) Mixture Screw so there is No Hesitation when Throttling from Idle to Full Throttle. Reset the Engine Idle if Required.**** If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.
