Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): sears tractor, exact model number, fuel outlet

Question
Hi

Some one gave me a small craftsman garden tractor with a 10hp single cyl tecumseh engine with low hours on it, it was sitting around for a whike, I had to get a battery, clean it up and take the carb off and get out the varnish and free the float, I got it to start but it stalls after I prime it w/carb cleaner, anotherwords it runs but not on its own, onl w/ starting fluids. does the carb need to be replaced? and can I get a new carb?

John

Answer
You should be able to get a replacement carburetor from any to come see dealer or Sears the best place to try first is www.Searspartsdirect.com.  You will need your exact model number.  Enter it into the search area on the right hand side of the homepage this should take you directly to the illustrated parts list for your product.

You could always try re-cleaning the fuel system.  Start with the fuel cap vent and the fuel tank and replace the fuel filter.  Look inside the fuel tank and see if there is a screen covering the fuel outlet be sure to flush the tank backwards.  Next blowout lines with carburetor cleaner or compressed air.  Then remove the carburetor and disassemble be sure to get the Main nozzle out of the center of the carburetor if possible.  Clean every air and fuel passages with a wire from a twist tie or something similar.  Purchase a carburetor kit and new mounting gaskets and install.  I hope this information helps.
