Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): starter ring gear, ring gears, fly wheel

Question
HI,
Thanks for taking this question.  I need to pull the ring gear from under the fly wheel on a B&S 12.5hp elec. start engine and replace it.  Will I need a special puller to get the flywheel off or will it come off with just a regular 3 'tooth' puller.  Both the starter and ring gears are pretty chewed up.  It's been working fine for a few years but lately seems to always stop on the broken teeth and I have to move the ring gear around with a screwdriver to get it to start.  Is there any other special things I should know before I tackle this job?  I've looked over all of the FAQ in your forum and only found one problem like mine.  Thanks for all of your help, to me and to everyone else.  You are a blessing.
Jack

Answer
A flywheel puller is a bolt type puller.  It usually has two bolts that screw into the flywheel and then a large bolt that puts pressure on the end of the crankshaft to pop the flywheel.  Take the blower housing off and you will see where the bolts screw into the flywheel a puller like this is an expensive and available at a hardware store.  The only thing to remember is when you put it back together to torque the flywheel bolts properly I'm not sure but I think its 60 foot pounds.  I hope this information is helpful.
