Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Setting pointd on JD 318 Onan B43G, john deere 318 garden tractor, john deere 318

Question
I have a My John Deere 318 Garden tractor has an Onan 2-cylinder 18 horse engine model # B43G.

It has started spitting and sputtering.  It will not come up to power.  From other engines I have worked with this is eather a gas line proplem or points/timing.  How do I set the points & timing on this puppy?

Answer
Hello Dale:

Remove the Point Set Cover. Watch the Point Set Plunger and Turn the Engine. When the Plunger is Fully Extended, then Set the Point Gap to .015in to .020in. The Timing is Internal for the Valves and The Flywheel Key Times the Firing of the Plug/s. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers (318) and Click Find. Then Select your Model from the Search Results Area. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.
