Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): rough running, spec numbers, model numbers

Question
I have a MTD that is 20 yrs old. It has been a great mower until this year, when it became hard to start. I changed the spark plug and fuel filter and it made little difference. What else should I check? Also it goes forward but grinds when I try to put it in reverse. What should I replace for that?

Answer
Hello Steve:

From your Description it Sounds like the Carburetor Requires Soaking and Cleaning and the Clutch and/or Clutch Brake Requires Adjusting. Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Engine or the Mower Model Numbers, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The Engine Model Numbers May be Stamped Into the Blower Housing (metal engine cover) Above the Spark Plug. The Mower Model Numbers are Usually Located Under the Seat on a Sticker on the Body of the Mower. Thanks.
