Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): starter solenoid, starter solenoid, electro magnet

Question
I have an older craftsman 20hp tractor, model number 917.250032 with an ONAN Engine model number 739.11054D.  I ordered a new starter solenoid from Sears and after replacing it I am almost certain I have re-wired (installed it wrong) the solenoid wrong.  It won't even click when I try and turn it over.  Please HELP!!!

Thanks, Carrie

Answer
Attach the large + wire from the battery to one of the top posts and the large wire going to the starter motor to the other. There should be two small terminals on the side. Or one and an internal ground.  You should have unplugged one or two connector when you removed the original solenoid.  Reattach those wires to the bottom terminals on the solenoid.  To energize the solenoid all switches and connectors have to conduct current from one side to the other.  The current goes into the solenoid via the top post from the battery.  It then goes through the start circuit and back to the solenoid.  This creates an electro magnet in the solenoid and it clicks connecting the two top posts.  You have to have a good battery 12.6 V and clean connections.  You can follow the current through the circuit with a continuity meter.  12V should not go to ground until it gets through the starter motor. If it does anywhere along the path that is the faulty area.
