Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Troy-bilt transmission noise, input shaft, disposable gloves

Question
My Troy-bilt Mod. # 13BX609G063 makes a grinding noise when attempting to engage forward but runs in reverse just fine.  I'd put rearview mirrors on it and cut my grass going backwards except the PTO is locked out when in reverse, and my goat was recently relocated to the freezer... sooo... I got a problem...

Answer
It sounds like shift keys are worn.  There are two keys to slide along the input shaft they transfer power by engaging the inside of the selected gear.  When normally wears the gears is shifting on the go it is an industry accepted method but it is still hard on the shift keys this is not a synchronized transmission.  The way to alleviate this would be to fully depress the clutch before shifting allowing the transmission input shaft to stop bad of course would stop for forward motion so not practical.  The only way to fix this will be to remove the transmission and take it apart if it is the transmission I am thinking about it is full of black sticky grease that you have to purchase from a Tecumseh Peerles dealer it is called betonite (?).  Wear disposable gloves, because it will stain your hands the.  Be sure all the grease is clean up use soapy water and compressed air to dry the components reassemble with new parts and put a can of their grease in it.  It may be easier to just replace the transmission.  I hope I've helped
