Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere, compression stroke, compression release

Question
I have a John Deere with a BS 17 hp intex. Model 31F707 01
Have trouble starting when motor is cold.  I have tried
adjusting the valves, but this does not help.  Someone
told me they have an internal pressure valve inside of
engine.  Is this correct or do you have any suggestions
for me to try?

Thanks

Answer
Hello Dennis:

Usually when the Valve Clearances are Set Properly, the Compression Release will Function Properly. If you have Properly Set the Valve Clearances with the Engine at TDC on Compression Stroke, then you will need to Remove the Valve Cover and Turn the Engine Slowly. Watch the Exhaust Valve and you should See a Slight Movement when the Piston is Almost at TDC of the Compression Stroke. If you Fail to See this Movement, then the Internal Compression Release is Damaged. Some of these Engines have the Compression Release Made to the Cam and Other Models have the Compression Release as a Part of the Cam. According to the Breakdown, this Engine has the Compression Release that is a Part of the Cam. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine at this Site Addy; http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/manual_and_more/doclist.aspx?categ... and Enter the Model Numbers (XXXXXX) and the First 4 Type Numbers (XXXX) in the Appropriate Boxes and Click GO. Then Select Download PDF. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Find. Then Select your Model from the Search Results Area. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
