Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): honda self propel weak, tension spring, arinet

Question
I just purchased a used honda hrt216tda mower.  The self propel is weak, though it feels stronger when I first use the mower in any given mowing session.  If I lift the rear of the mower up, you can see the wheels spinning like crazy.  However, once you put the wheels on the ground, it just doesn't move as fast as I'd like.
Other clues:
 1.  gear 1 seems better than gear 2 or 3.
 2.  the rear wheels are almost smooth
 3. btw, I have no problem pulling the unit backwards
 4.  the mower starts on the first pull and runs strong
 5.  I have a somewhat hilly terrain and the ground is   often somewhat moist as I live on the coast of Maine.

This is my first Honda and I absolutely love it.  I just wish I could get the self propel unit to work a little better.

Thanks, in advance, for your time, experience, and knowledge.

Answer
Hello Michael:

From your Description it Sounds like the Belt May Require Replacing or the Wheel Tension Spring May be Weak and Not Pulling the Transmission Properly. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Mower/Engine at this Site Addy, http://hayward.arinet.com/scripts/EmpartISAPI.dll?MF&app=ASP&lang=EN&TF=Mainfram... and Select the Catalog American Honda. I Suggest you Check the Tension Spring and Belt. Replace the Spring or Belt if Required. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
