Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kawasaki FB460V engine--no spark, kawasaki fb460v, electric clutch

Question
QUESTION: I had received message for last reply. Is there a method to bypass on/off switch and PTO switch in handle bar assembly to see if engine will run without switching system???.This motor is on a Toro commercial 44" walk behind mower. i have replaced ignition coil and igniter and still will not start.I see a a lot of responses with these engines having no spark issues!!! Should spark plug cap have continuity from screw in tip to inside metal plug clip?? I have none.

Thanks for your help,

ANSWER: Two different answers

1, if it is an electric clutch you would have to take it completely out of the system.  Unplug from the PTO switch and jump wires.  The other is a neutral switch that is engaged when the unit is in neutral.  The module cannot be jumped but the other switches can.  There could be one on the handle by the pistol grip controls or if T-Bar under the control panel.

2, if it is a mechanical clutch there is a switch under the control panel for the engagement lever.  It can be jumped with a jumper wire. If there is an on and off key switch this too can be jumped.  Same with the pistol grip or T-Bar controls.

I think earlier that you said there were wires coming out from under the flywheel.  If so there is an electric clutch.  The PTO switch is a double pole double throw switch.  This means that the switch does two things and both circuits have to work.

Go to www.toro.com, click on landscape contractor and clips to where you can look up parts.  Enter the model number when asked.  The next screen will give you a list of all the years that model was made.  Click on the one with the same first two numbers as yours.  The next screen will give you choices in red boxes click on manuals.  I am pretty sure the service manual for that machine is there for a free download.  That will help too, probably than me.  If this does not work private e-mail me your model number and serial number and I can send you some stuff I have on electrical diagnosis.

QUESTION: i had retested all circuits and switching operations for continuity and all looked good.i had unscrewed spark plug cap from ignition coil wire and there was no continuity from screw tip to inner metal clip holder.I had previously thought that this was my problem, but I would get spark intermediately at different times.Should this cap have continuity at ALL times??? I would think so from all my mechanical troubleshooting projects!! The 44" Toro mower I am trying to repair is a Model # 30112/ serial # 90225. I currently have the Toro44" mower Operators manual, however it does not get into great troubleshooting detail This model is from the 80's and has never given me any problems. I have had no luck diagnosing this spark issue.

Thanks again for your responses.

Answer
I just did this so I know it's there go to www.toro.com.  Click on the bar at the top that says commercial.  On the next page the left hand side and click on lookup parts.  When the next screen comes up product Center.  When the next screen comes up enter your model number 30112.  When the next screen comes up choose model year in the list.  When the next screen comes up at the bottom in a red rectangular box click on manuals.  When the next screen comes up choose Kawasaki engine manual.  Let the Adobe file download and from the index choose a  electrical  system.  This will bring up the page with your wiring diagram on it.

As far as your question on continuity yes the spark plug wire should have continuity from one end to the other but the wire is not used straight ends at 90° to attach to the spark plug so continuity should be checked at 90°.

I hope this information will help you out to solve your problem.
