Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): deck handle lift, loose fasteners, metal fatigue

Question
Hi, I have a big unusual problem. I have a TMO-3500006(MTD) riding tractor. It is a 1994 model,18hp 42" b&s twin 2 i/c hydrostatic trans. with electric start. model#422707 type#110701 code#9511095a
The problem is my deck lift handle always engages (slips outof the index bracket) when I have it in the off (disengaged) position. It slips out whether the motor is running or not. It is very inconvenient to operate under this condition. I have to try and hold the deck lever up and in the index bracket slot while trying to put it in reverse and steering backwards. If I am going forward, I encounter the same problem. Since neither of these items have been replaced and I noticed some wear on the index bracket and possibly the deck lever handle, could it just be worn out? The extension spring attached to the deck handle seem to be good. I have good tension on the deck handle when I am adjusting the height. If it is these two items, do you think a great-grandma can do the job? thanks, Joyce

Answer
I would start guessing age and metal fatigue is causing most of the problem.

How much is it worth repairing? Below is the part numbers and prices from MTDProducts.com

While the arm is pretty expensive, the plate is a must to start with.  However, a much cheaper band-aid solution may be to use a boungee strap or some type of and S ring to hold the lever in place when you are not mowing.

Not a very good answer, but there really aren't any other parts other than loose fasteners that can cause your problem.
Let me know if this helps.
