Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): no spark, spark plug wire, cylinder fin

Question
Just replaced the connecting rod on a B&S 30 hp engine (28b707, 1114e1) ready to start ,no spark at spark plug coupler. Has voltage at the coupler, and can read the resistance of the mag coil.

Any further test b4 I replace mag etc?

Thanks  KEN!!!
PS Installed on a Murray 30560x99a

Answer
Are you bench testing or is it back in the tractor?

If bench testing are you using a 12V DC battery to spin the starter motor? Some tractors have to be plugged back into the wiring harness to get spark.  Battery ignition.  It is a lot of work to put the engine in to the tractor just to test for spark but that's the way it is. 30HP seems awfully big for the model number you have.  The 28 means that it is a 28 cubic engine thats normally 10 to 15 HP.

When it is in the tractor attack it to the electrical system including all grounds.  The battery should read 12.6 V DC to start the engine.  Then try to start it with the safety system hooked up.  I mean in the seat with the PTO off and the brake on.  TO test for spark leave the plugs in the cylinder and put other plugs in the spark plug wire.  Lay it against the cylinder fin and engage the starter.  If no start replace the coils.  Be sure to set the flywheel air gap correctly.  With the hood off the tractor you should be able to change out the coil with the blower housing off.  If still no luck get back to me.

Good luck on the project.
