Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 14.5 H.P. B&S Engine Problem, air filter element, air passages

Question
How are you today? I have a Murray Ride Mower with the below engine model. It set for about a year without being crunk. It is in great shape except for when you crank it the thing idles fine, but when it gets in a low pull it looks like the governor kicks on and it chokes itself. You have to let off the gas for a minute or two to get it to quit popping, spitting and sputtering, and agian if you speed it up slow it does ok until you engage the mower or go up a hill. Also if you speed it up to fast it does the same thing. I took the carb. apart and soaked it for a couple of hours hoping that would be the problem but unfortunatly it still does the same thing. Could you please tell me what is wrong with it?
Thank you for your time if you read this.

Answer
Has normal maintained been done? Oil change, air filter element replaced, new gas, etc.   The new gas is important.

If done remove the fuel cap from the unit and clean the vent in the cap.  Next remove the fuel line at the fuel filter and clean the filter or replace it.

Sorry to say soaking the carb for a couple hours won't do it.  Remove the carb, disassemble it and use a wire from a twist tie to clean "all fuel and air" passages.  Use compressed air to do it.  If no compressor use a can of compressed air used to clean keyboards.

Purchase a carb kit and install the parts. Replace all the gaskets.  Set the high speed to about 3100 to 3200 RPM's. This is done with a proper governor spring.  If the Gov lever has not been touched it should be ok.  This will take care of any fuel system problems.

You didn't mention smoke so I will assume there is not an issue with the engine pumping oul into the carb through the breather. If there is you have an air leak in the crankcase.

Hope this helps.
