i have a exmark 48" walk behind mower with a kawasaki fc460v on it would like to know if i can replace it with a kawasaki fc540v

You can but the electrical system is different.  Get hold of exmark in NB or a dealer to see if there is a kit.  Sometimes they issued a bulletin on how to do it.  Otherwise get a parts book from a model with a Kawasaki and compare with a kohler.  Replace the needed parts.   If you find a dealer with PartSmart the parts lookup system will do it for you.
