Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler engine electrical problem, john deere lt 155, safety switches

Question
I have a John Deere LT 155 tractor with Kohler CV15S engine. Spec no. is 41594.  When the ignition key is turned the starter does not run.  There is no noise or clicking etc.  The battery is fully charged.  What would you suggest for checking the starting circuit?  Thank you.

Answer
Start by removing the battery cables and cleaning the battery terminals and cable ends with a wirebrush.  I fix a lot of mower just by ensuring the connections are clean.

If there is still nothing, check the fuse.  The fuse is usually located under the dash board.

Is the fuse is good, check each safety switch next.  Start at the key switch and follow each wire to the safety switch.  Usually there are three safety switches; seat, transmission/neutral and the deck/blades.  Dis-connect each terminal and reconnet.  This will sometimes clean the contacts.

If still nothing, locate the solenoid by following the positive battery cable from the battery.  The solenoid will have a large wire from the battery to the solenoid, and a large wire from the solenoid to the starter.  It will also have at least one small wire, maybe two.  One wire systems have only an exciter on the one wire.  When you turn the key to the start position, with all the mower controls in the start position, 12 volts DC should reach the small wire when the key is turned to the start position.  If there is no voltage then you have a safety switch preventing the voltage from reaching the solenoid.

Let me know what you find.
