Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Stalling, kohler command, riding lawnmower

Question
I have a Scott's riding lawnmower, made by John Deere, with a Kohler Command 17.5 hp engine.  It has been running fine for several years.  The last few times it seems to stall and die after the engine gets warm.  It will restart after 5~10 minutes - and then stall again shortly.  I suspect a fuel problem.  What should I check or replace?
Thanks,
Phil

Answer
Begin by making sure you have a fresh supply of fuel in the tank. Might want to also make sure your air filter is clean, your spark plug is good. When it dies out does it have a good spark, check by removing the spark plug and ground the base of it to the block? Does it have a nice strong blue spark across the electrode? If yes turn your attention to the fuel system.  The carburetor, does it have a good fuel supply? Keep in mind these should be done at the point when the mower dies out. We don't really care what situations exists when it is cold before it starts, we want to know whats wrong at the very moment it dies out. If you have good fuel supply at the carb. Chances are you need a carb rebuild or complete cleaning. If you fail to show good fuel supply to the carb keep moving back towards the tank to find your obstruction. Bad fuel filter, clogged line, obstruction in the tank, or blocked vent on the fuel cap. ..........Tom
