Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): BS 10A902 wont start, spark plug wire, presence control

Question
My mower won't start.  I'm not getting any spark when I pull the starter with the plug removed and laid against the block.  Any suggestions?

Answer
If you are not getting a spark to jump the gap, the first thing to check would be a safety switch. The safety switch is designed to shut the mower off when the operator presence control to handle is not engaged. the one you have to holddown to run the mower. To find it, follow  the cable from the handle to the engine and you will see where it attaches to the brake mechanism there will be a wire there be sure to wire is hooked up and ground.

With a newer engine with electronic ignition would be to remove the coil and clean the mounting posts. Reinstall using an old photograph to set the gap the best way to do that is slide the coil all the way back taking the fasteners rotate the flywheel until the magnets are in front of coil. Loosen the fasteners and allow the magnets to draw the oil to a tight in the fasteners and remove photograph. Be sure, the spark plug wire is firmly attached to the coil.

If still no spark replace the coil.

Good luck in your project
