Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Craftsman LT4000, craftsman lt4000, belt tension

Question
I have a craftsman LT4000 (917.252540) lawn tractor that the belt has loosened up on.  Any idea how I'd be able to tighten it?

Answer
Hi Jody, belts just don't loosen up, there is always a reason why. Either the belt has stretched. Or a component of that system is broken or failing. Unfortunately, unless it is a more expensive model of mower, Ex. John Deere, Toro..etc. They have adjustments, as well as most high end commercial models. Mowers in the Craftsman line usually, and almost always, have no adjustments. The belt tension is provided by a pulley with a spring called the idler pulley. It loads and unloads pressure on the belt itself with the movement of a linkage lever. So when a belt does become loose it either needs to be replaced, or the is a fault with a idler pulley or spring. 90% of the time, it's a belt replacement........Tom
