Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): lx 277, regulator rectifier, bridge rectifier

Question
my battery light is on the battery went dead it is a good batt the batt is not charging Where should i start

john deeere lx277

Answer
The first thing would be to check the state or output, while the engine is running.  If there is current flowing to the current going to the battery check your ground.  If current is not flowing to the battery the problem could be the regulator rectifier or stator.  Remember.

Engines produced AC current, but the battery needs DC current to charge.  The way it is changed is by going through a diode.  The diode could be in line and easily checked with the continuity meter.  Current should flow one way but not the other.  If.  The diodes are inside a bridge rectifier or a regulator rectifier it will be a little more difficult, but the principles are still the same.  A fully charged battery should read 12.6 V DC.  I have a feeling it is to ground wire.  Best of luck.
