Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 1995 Craftsman Lawn tractor, craftsman lawn tractor, worn piston rings

Question
I have a 1995 Craftsman rider model 917.252711, serial 0417954 002689. I mow on hilly areas and have had this mower smoke intermittently. Usually I find fresh oil in the air filter. The engine is a 18hp Kohler Magnum. Recently I had an extended smoking episode . The next time I was mowing it sounded like it was missing and would lose power going up hill. Could this problem be the rings and is it worth it to have it repaired.  If not what would be a good replacement that would be compatible with the craftsman accessories i.e. bagging system, dethatcher and plow. Thanks

Answer
John,

Its far cheaper to have your local shop replace your rings then to spend alot of money on a new tractor.
Smoke and oil collection is an indication of worn piston rings and the cost is alot more to scrap your current tractor for a new one.
Have the rings replaced this should solve the power loss and the oil consumption.
