Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler CV730-0029 engine that races at high rpms, sears craftsman lawn tractor, craftsman lawn tractor

Question
CV730S
CV730-0029  specific engine type
From a Sears Craftsman lawn tractor
917-2760022 Model number

Engine got very hot and when started now races at high rpms.

I removed mice nests causing heat build up, and then tested the electric solenoid to
make sure it was opening and closing correctly, since I already had so much of the engine cowling
and things removed at the time

I believe the issue is with the governor but I don't know how to test it or to adjust it if needed.
Additionally I can not find any diagram on-line that depicts how the governor works inside the engine
which therefore means I don't understand what it would take to examine the internals if so needed.

Also is it possible that the problem is with the carburetor not the governor?

Any information available would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks loads for the help.

Answer
Dave,

I did some research on this issue your having and spoke to My Kohler Rep From what He says this Model engine Has a Governor shaft But would not cause the issues you described since the governor is a fixed Shaft.

He did reccommend the carb May Just need an Overhaul and was kind enough to give the Part# 24 757 18S for your Model engine and did say the racing is Not Normal and is a very good indication of improper adjustment.

On the Carb there should be a lever that goes from the Carb down the block to a connecting Joint that enters the side of your engine block and should only move approx 1" this would be the governor Control

The way a governer Works is simple It operates By centifical force as your Cam spins it exerts energy The Blower Housing has a fin Located near the fan when your engines RPMs Increase it blows the fin away from the Blower Pressing the Lever outwards as it increases the distance from Blower to Fin the lever presses a cylinder against a Governor collar which puts exxcessive pressure on the Camshaft Back Up at your Carb another connecting rod pulls the Fuel and Air Intake close choking the engine down slightly thus reducing the amount of fuel being injected into the engine.

This Is why it cant be your governor Because if the Gov was in failure the engine would litterally fly apart the piston and shaft would disintegrate and shatter like glass causing alot more damage to the Block.

I would say try adjusting or rebuilding your carb
