Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Cold starting, fuel line filter, john deere l130

Question
My John Deere L130 has a Kolher CV23S Serial# 3310210141 engine. The engine will not start after setting between weekly mowing. It will turn over but won't start until I spray starting fluid into carburator. It then starts immediately and after running for a short period I can turn off the engine and it will now restart.

Answer
Morris
Kohler engines on the JD are noted for this hard starting, one of the reasons is the fuel pump may be losing vacuum when it is cold then after getting the engine warm it will build up a better seal (expansion) with all the gaskets, valves, rings getting hot.The other thing is the fuel line from the tank to the filter has a tendency to go down then after it leaves the filter it has to travel up if there is poor vacuum it makes it harder. I would get a vacuum check done and also you may want to help the fuel line, filter by raising it up to help the flow of fuel.
