Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): How do I increase the walking speed of the self propel? Also a BBC question, jet nozzles, honda gcv 160

Question
First off I have to say many thanks to all the experts answering questions.  I did have a problem with my "newly" purchased 2 year old mower that was surging.  After reading the various troubleshooting articles for a Honda GCV 160 engine I finally got it purring the way it should.  In my case I disassembled and cleaned the carburetor with spray cleaner and twist ties to remove any debris in the tiny orifices of the carburetor and jet nozzles.  I think gasoline varnish or debris in the porting was my culprit.  THANKS FOR THE TIPS.

The details of the mower:
Husqvarna 5221 BBC Mower with rear wheel drive.

Two questions for you:

How do I increase the walking speed of the self propel?  It’s just a little slower then I would like it.  As mentioned, the mower is about 2 years old but new for me as of a couple of weeks ago.  I have not yet but will check tension/adjustment of the variable speed engagement.  The belt does have some cracks in it so that’s one thing to check/replace.  The transmission feels smooth, sometimes there might be a slight delay before it engages (kind of like a slipping belt might do).  After checking this, what else is there?  I’ve read about trying to find a larger size pulley.  Anything else to consider?

This is the first time for me to use a mower with a BBC (blade clutch).  Is it normal when it is engaged for the mower to make a short screeching (metal on metal) noise?  This has to be the clutch grabbing on to the blade assy?  Is this sound normal?

Thanks for your help
Andrew

Answer
If they do not offer an optional pulley you cannot do it without buying numerous pulleys and trying them.  By the way, you will have to change the belt length with each pulley size.

The noise is normal.  The best way to engage a BBC is to put the engine at full speed and quickly engage the lever.  Don't do it slow because you slip the clutch plates against each other until you get them engaged.

Good Luck
