Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): old riding mower, B & S engine, briggs stratton engine, briggs stratton

Question
Hi Howard,
My son and I have acquired an old, (1960's early 70's) Wards Power-Kraft riding mower with a 5hp Briggs & Stratton engine.  It is in fine shape, but we can't get the engine to stay running.  We'd like to refurbish it, not to original, but to a nice working relic and conversation piece.  The engine model # 130902, Type 0216-02, Code 908286.  Can I get a new carburetor for this or a rebuild kit and if so where?  Also, if we have to get a new engine could that be possible and what would be the best method for getting a replacement engine that fits this mower?  Thanks for any and all info.

Answer
Hello Stephen,

I would recommend contacting a Briggs & Stratton small engine shop and inquiring about replacement parts. I prefer to rebuild the carburetor due to the high cost of carb's.  Ask your local small engine shop if they have any rebuild kits.  I would recommend the Small Engine Care & Repair , (Briggs & Stratton) Step-by-step guide to maintaining your small engine[$22.95].  The local shop might be able to help you re: replacement of the entire engine.

Hope that you find this info helpful.

Regards,

Howard
