Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Troy Built HydoTrans. pops out of gear., automatic transmission fluid, linkage problem

Question
QUESTION: I have a Troy Built lawn tractor that runs great...but needs help. Thanks for your time and help.
Model 13AX609G063...Serial 1E179H10017
It has a Kholer engine CV16S Ser 2912807621 with a 42" cut.
Recently the shift lever became a little difficult to put in the forward gear. And then while mowing it slips out of gear. (Hydo trans) No problems in reverse. Are there any adjustments I can make to resolve this or does it require a service technician?

ANSWER: If this is a hydro forward and reverse are controlled by a small plate in the hydro.  If it runs ok in reverse and moves forward ok It sounds mechanical. What I mean is that the lever you use to put it into forward must be held there by friction.  I would check that point where the friction is applied.  It may also be a linkage problem.  Check to be sure all feasters are tight.  Next check the belt condition. Check fluid level and quality.  Does it smell burnt if so replace it.  Depending on the hours it may need to be replaced.

QUESTION: Do you know what kind of transmission it has by the model and serial listed previously? And what kind of lubrication and how much should it smell burnt?

Answer
If the oil is black and grimy when you feel it between your fingers its dirty.  If it is burnt it will smell somewhat like burnt toast.

There are only two manufacturers of transaxles used in the US Hydro Gear and Eaton.  They make up 90% of the tractors.  Early on they used Mobil 454 or ATF, automatic transmission fluid.  Today they use 10W40 motor oil.  I have been told by Hydro Gear that if all the fluid is drained 10W40 is ok to put back in. If there is a filter change it too.  Be sure to check the oil cold because it expands when hot.
