Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Blade Adapter Removal, oil drain plug, side discharge mower

Question
I have a Craftsman 22" self-propelled side discharge mower with a 550 series Briggs and Stratton Engine.  I am trying to change the oil and I cannot get the Blade adapter off the crankshaft.  I am trying to remove the debris shield to access the oil drain plug.  Any advice would greatly be appreciated. Thanks. Scott from Leander, TX

Answer
Most of the new engines do not have a plug in the bottom any longer.  To drain the oil remove the dipstick and pour the oil out the tube.  The blade adaptor may have a set screw in it. Check for that.  The shield on the bottom may be held with bolts on the top side. Those plastic covers are used to keep the transmission belt from being damaged.  Hope this helps
