Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 12hp i/c briggs carb, nylon threads, c briggs

Question
I have an old Rally riding mower i just bought for a few bucks. The engine spins over, but you gotta dump gas in the carb to get it to run for about 5 seconds. Do you think I need a new carburetor or is it something else. I sprayed carb cleaner all over it trying to clear whatever is blocking the gas. The gas line is all new gas I put in and it is fine because I pulled it off of the carb and it spilled. What do you think?

Answer
Hey Bubba,

Check my out previous answer ON HOW TO diagnose an engine no-start condition. Since you have to put gas in (the carb) to get it running, the gas goes in the spark plug hole and then trying to run it (once you've screwed in the spark plug).

Try to determine whether you have a problem with your spark plug.  Then check & see if your fuel is reaching the carb.  The next step would be to remove the carburetor for service &/or repair.

Note:  Carburetor Cleaner has the capacity to damage rubber seals and nylon threads inside the carburetor.  Whenever using Carb Cleaner you need to be especially careful how you apply it. Don't spray it everywhere (always use caution!!)

Let me know how it goes.

Howard
