Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Homelite Zr Series Trimmer, stihl fs45, compression gauge

Question
I have a Homelite ZR xeries Trimmer 2625cd made in 1993; there are some additional numbers, 06561-01 Family SH2025ub24ra.
Well it has been hanging in my garage because I had a job and so could afford to have someone do my yard.  Now, I can not so I tried to start the trimmer in order to stay in good standing with my neighbors. It spudders when I pull the cord, I have added gas, I have a spark from the plug but no kick back when I pull the cord.  DO you think I can fix this trimmer, worth having it repaired or give up and let the neighbors stew.

Answer
I would start by checking the compression with a compression gauge.  You should have at least 90 psi.

If the fuel lines are hard and brittle then odds are the carburetor parts are hard and brittle as well.  Stiff carburetor diaphrams will not work properly.

Given the age of the trimmer it is borderline on worth fixing.  Most shops offer an estimate charge usually around $20.00.  They will examine the trimmer, look up the part prices and provide you with a very accurate estimate on the repair cost.

We charge $40.00 labor plus parts for a carb overhaul and fuel line replacement.  Total bill usually comes in around $60.00.  You can often buy a bargin basement cheap trimmer from most department stores for around $80.00.   You can even get a Stihl FS45, Cousumer Reports best buy,  for $139.95.  So, my point is it is often more cost effective to purchase a new trimmer rather than repair.

Call around to you local repair shops to see if they offer estimates and compare the repair versus replacement cost.

Let me if this helps.
