Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Murray Wheel/Tire Removal, murray riding mower, soft hammer

Question
Hi Fred,

I have a 94 Murray riding mower and I need to remove the rear wheel/tire but I am having problems and hope you may be able to help. I have removed the rubber cover, clip, and washer but it still won't budge. Can you tell me if there is something more I need to remove in order to get the wheel off? Thanks!

Answer
Sounds like wheel is rushed to the axle.  Try spraying it, soak it), with WD40 overnight and then heat with a torch.  Heat the wheel hub not the shaft. Try pulling on it.    If it is real bad remove the transaxle and see if you can find somebody with a hydraulic press.  I have seen ones where they would not come off and we had to replace the axle and wheel.

If you are using a hammer protect the end of the shaft by using a soft hammer or a piece of wood.  If you do not have a press use two stout boards.  Suspend the transaxle between them with the hub resting on the wood.  Drive the shaft out of the hub.
