Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Jon Deere L120 Not Charging, john deere l120, system damages

Question
Hello, I was wondering if You might have any suggestions on this issue. I have a charging problem with a John Deere L120 with a 20hp Brigg V twin engine. I replaced the battery, didn't fix the prob. I bought a new voltage regulator and installed it, and still not charging. If I disconnect the red wire off the voltage regulator and check for voltage engine running at full rpms, I get nothing. I'm leaning toward the alternator, if the alternator is bad, will the engine still run? I have to jump it off my car to get it started, but cant use the blades, they wont engage because of the pto system. there are 2 black wires coming off the alternator, can i check these wires for voltage? if so how much should I receive? Thank You for any Help!
Dennis.

Answer
Hello Dennis:

From your Description it Sounds like the Stator/Charging Coil is Bad and Requires Replacing. For Testing the Electrical (Charging) System on Mowers you can Use this Site Addy; http://faqs.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/faqs.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3438&p... and Use the Link for AC Volts/DC Amps Meter Setting Chart. This is for Briggs Engines and Works Well for Kohler and Other Engine OEMs. ***NEVER JUMP A MOWER FROM A RUNNING VEHICLE.*** The Vehicles Charging System is Larger (Usually 68 AMPs Min) than the Mowers Stator System (Usually 16 AMPs Max) and the Larger Charging System Damages the Voltage Regulator and Stator on the Mower. Use Just the Battery. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers (L120) and Click Find. Then Select your Model from the Search Results Area. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
