Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 20hp B&S V Twin engine, overhead valve engines, gallon gas tank

Question
QUESTION: I have a 20hp B&S V Twin engine on a Sears riding mower.  It has a 1 gallon gas tank. I have had the mower since 2001. The engine seems to run fine as long as the tank is over 1/2 full.(About 1 hours mowing time).  When the level in the tank gets below 1/2 it starts cutting out every so often like the engine is running out of gas, but it isn't.  I have changed the fuel filter, the air filter, the fuel lines, cleaned out the gas tank.  Could this be a sign of a weak fuel pump? I don't know what else to try.  Thanks for your help.

ANSWER: Hello Mike:

Sorry for the Delay. This Question was Located in the Question Pool. From your Description it Sounds Like the gas Tank Cap is Not Venting the Tank Properly, the Spring Type Hose Clamps are Weak and Allow a Vacuum Leak that Prevents the Fuel Pump from Operating Properly or the Fuel Pump is Bad. I Suggest you; 1-  Check the Gas Tank Cap and Ensure it is Venting the Tank. 2- Replace ALL the Spring Type Hose Clamps with the Screw Type Clamps. 3- Replace the Fuel Pump if the Other 2 Components Check Good. Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The Model Numbers May be Stamped Into the Blower Housing (metal engine cover) Above the Spark Plug. Many horizontal shaft, overhead valve engines have these numbers stamped into the OHV rocker cover. However, on certain overhead valve powered generators, the equipment manufacturer installs a decorative chrome rocker cover OVER the Briggs cover. If your engine has a decorative cover, it may be necessary to remove it in order to locate the Model, Type, and Code. You can Also Use this Site Addy; http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/BS_modeltypecode.pdf for Assistance in Locating the Model, Type and Code Numbers of the Engine. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

QUESTION: The model number of the B&S 20 hp engine is: 407777. The type number is: 0119-E3.  I have tried to blow out the gas tank cap with an air compessor. The vent hole seems to be open.  I can feel air blowing out the other side. Also, the fuel pump listed on "Sears Parts" website does not look like the one that is actually on the engine.

Answer
Hello Again Mike:

From your Description and From Viewing the Breakdown of this Engine, it Sounds like the Problem May be Caused by the Fuel Pump being Weak and Requires Replacing; If you have Replaced ALL the Hose Clamps as I Instructed in the First E-mail. You can Purchase a 12 VDC 4 to 7 PSI Fuel Pump and Install it in the Fuel Line. Wire it so it is Turned Off when the Ign Switch is in the Off Position. The Electric Fuel Pump is Made by Mr Gasket, the Part Number is 12-S and the Price is Approximately $44.00us. Does the Tanks have a Pickup Tube? If Yes, then Remove the Pickup Tube and Inspect it for a Hole Approximately where the Engine Starts to Act like it is Running Out of Gas. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine at this Site Addy; http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/manual_and_more/doclist.aspx?categ and Enter the Model Numbers (407777) and the First 4 Type Numbers (0119) in the Appropriate Boxes and Click GO. Then Select Download PDF. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.
