Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere 445, fuel pressure regulator, john deere 445

Question
I bought a used '98 445 Lawn Tractor from a local dealer. It ran fine for 2 years, then stopped. I checked it out and found the plastic cam gear. I got disgusted and let it sit for 2 years, but decided to get it running a few weeks ago. (FYI: I owned and operated a custom engine machine shop for 26 years before closing in '03, so I can disassemble/assemble etc.) I bought the needed parts, ($150 for the cam/gear only, plus lifters is nuts, besides Kawasaki should warrant this poor design, but I guess JD would lose a lot of parts/service business).
After going back together, it ran well for aprox a month, then when starting one morning last week, it was difficult and barely runs while surging. If you hold the external gov arm, it seems to run steady, but if you move the dash throttle control up part way, it sounds like it's running on 1 cyl. If you bring it part way down it evens out somewhat, but continues to surge and run rough. I've checked the compression, and 3 cranks give 175 pds. The dash does not blink any codes. The fuel pump shoots a strong stream when disconnected. When it was apart, I emptied the tank, then used new gas the 1st time. If this was back in the mechanical days, I'd say there's a vacuum leak, but I realize things are controlled by sensor readings. I bought a fuel pressure regulator, but have not installed the $92 piece yet. I’ve checked other sensor prices and found out how high they are and don’t want to play a guessing game. I’d appreciate any insights/suggestions

Thanks,
Duane

Answer
Hello Duane:

Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. I can get Better Details for the Kawasaki Engine from Kawasaki and the JD Site Does Not give me Any Kawasaki Model Numbers to Refer to. However, You can Try Disconnecting/Unplugging the Manifold Air Pressure Sensor. If the Engine Runs Properly, then Replace the MAP Sensor. Thanks.
