Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B & S Valves, compression stroke, valve clearance

Question
QUESTION: I have a B & S model 286h77-0165 e1 it pretty much runs good up to about half throttle but not while under load, 1/2 throttle and up it make a horrible noise and it seems to be coming out of the carb intake, i have checked the compression and it is 112 lbs. i have also removed the head and checked the valve seat using water to see if it leaked i did not see any sign of leakage, my push rods are not bent and i set the valve clearance at I-005 and e-007. At full throttle it sounds like large amounts of air are being sucked in through the intake, if you were to block the intake with your hand it seems to mellow it out some. the thing that's throwing me off is that the comp. is 112, could it be the valve is sticking or burnt? Any suggustions before i spend money on a new head and valves would be appreciated and helpful. Thanks

ANSWER: Hello Dan:

I had 1 in the Shop a Few Weeks ago that had 110 to 115 PSI Compression and it had a Bad Valve Seat. Are you Sure the Engine was on TDC of the Compression Stroke when you Set the Valve Clearance? Have you Checked the Flywheel Key? Have you Checked the Muffler? Make Sure the Muffler is Not Restricted? If the Muffler is Restricted you will have the Problem you Described. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine at this Site Addy; http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/manual_and_more/doclist.aspx?categ and Enter the Model Numbers (286H77) and the First 4 Type Numbers (0165) in the Appropriate Boxes and Click GO. Then Select Download PDF. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

QUESTION: Thanks John, yes i did set the valve at tdc comp, i have also checked the muffler for restriction, i have not checked the flywheel key, but have been turning the engine over using the flywheel, but will do a double check on that. when the engine is running the exhast coming out of the pipe seems adequit, my float was bad and over flowed and it filled up the cylinder by turning it over it was extracted through the pipe, so i don't think there is any restrictions there, could I check it by blowing air into it, it has a round canister type muffler. so far i'm leaning toward the valves. i priced the valves and labor and for about an extra 25 bucks, i can get a new head with valves. if you have any more advice it would be appreciated, if not, thanks for the time and help.
Sincerley, Dan P.S. I am Blessed (:

Answer
Hello Again Dan:

Did you Check the Oil for Gas Contamination? Is the Crankcase Overfilled? If the Crankcase is Not Overfilled and the Flywheel Key is Good, then like you I am Leaning Towards a Bad Valve Seat or Sticking Valve. Till Next Time. May All Your Mechanical Problems be SMALL ONES and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks Again.

Best Wishes and Good Luck
