Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs & Stratton surging, craftsman riding mower, briggs stratton

Question
I have a Craftsman riding mower with a B&S 22hp OHV Intek engine that is about 5 years old, well maintained. It has started surging while idling or moving with the blades not engaged. When the blades are engaged the engine maintains constant speed. Seems like the governor is constantly searching. There are no adjustments on the carb. Pulling the choke out a small smount helps some. Any ideas? Thanks.

Answer
Sound as if it's starving for gas. The Carb. needs to be removed, cleaned throughly. making sure all jets are open, replace any worn parts. And reassemble. When the blades are engaged it is being compensated for by the governor to help the extra load on the motor. ....Tom
