QuestionQUESTION: I am experiencing a problem with my recently acquired John Deere 170 mower with a 38" deck. I have not been able to find the location for the 'extension spring' which I believe maintains the height of the deck once it is set. uuurrrrrgghhh

From your Description it Sounds like you are Asking About the Location of the Float Spring (Extension Spring) for the Deck Lift System. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H and Enter the Model Numbers (170) and Click Find. Then Select your Model from the Search Results Area. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. Select the Mower Deck and Lift Linkage File. Now Select the Mower Lift Lever and Lift Shaft Sub File. The Spring is # 16 in this Breakdown and you can Clearly See in the Breakdown where the Spring Attaches. If this Is Not the Spring you are Asking About; then Using the Breakdowns at this Site, Locate the Spring and Direct me to it so I can Identify the Correct Spring and Possibly Assist you Better. Thanks for the quick reply, but that was not the spring I was referring to. The spring I am trying to locate is: part number M71614. It is listed under section: (80 - WHEELS, NON-POWERED AXLES, SHEET METAL), subsection: (6 - SEAT AND FENDER DECK). It shows a picture of the spring on the page, but it does not show it connecting to anything?!!? urrrghh

If I am Not Mistaken,this Spring Attaches to the Height Rod and then to the Frame/Body to Hold the Rod in Place. I will Check Using the JD Mower that is in the Shop.
