Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Scotts Transmission, scotts lawn tractor, peerless transaxle

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I have a Scotts lawn tractor Model 42589x8 Serial S002047730298 Code 8006J. Transmission Peerless 7178P91, the number below this one is 42030135. When I release the brake pedal the tranmission is very noisy and the tractor moves very slow. I checked all the pulleys and belts and everything seems ok. I read your other response on what to check. How do I check the fluid level in the transmission? How do I remove the air from the trans? how do I change the fluid if needed? any help would be greatly appreciated. I already have the trans removed from the tractor...

ANSWER: Hello Erick:

This is a Murray Manufactured Mower Sold Under the Scotts Name. According to the Breakdown at the Briggs Site (Murray Yard Products), this Mower Uses a Peerless Transaxle Model Number; 205-024B.  You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ and Select the P. Then Select Peerless. Then Select To View Parts List Click Here in the Upper Right of the Page. Then Select the Series Transaxle (205). Then Select the Transaxle File for your Transaxle (205-205-024). You can View a Breakdown of this Mower At this Site Addy; http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select Shop Online Parts Lookup. Select the Model Tab. Select the OEM and Enter the Model Numbers (42589x8). Now Double Click on your Model in the Results Area. Now Select Sectional View. Now Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View.  On Some of these Transaxle there is a Drain Plug and on Some there is No Drain Plug. For the Transaxle with No Drain Plug, I Usually Remove the Transaxle and Remove the Fill Plug (Peerless Breakdown #85) and Allow the Oil to Drain from it. Then Reinstall the Transaxle and Refill with 80W90 Gear Oil. There are No Internal Parts Sold for this Transaxle. If you Find the Transaxle is Bad, then it has to be Replaced. The Transaxle Part Number was Peerless #794669 and this Part Number has been Superceded to Peerless #799031 and is Listed on the Outdoor Distributors Site as Costing $529.69us Dollars. If there is a Lot of Noise from the Transaxle, then I will Say there is Most Like a Damaged Gear or Bushing and you are Going to have to Replace the Transaxle. I Suggest you Try Adding 1/2 Quart of 80W90 Gear Oil and See if it Helps with the Noise and the Motion Drive. If Not, then Replace the Transaxle or Mower. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Hi John, thanks for all the help everything. My follow up question is The transaxle spins and until you put your hand on the axle it stops. I pulled both parts of the axle apart and didn't find anything broken. I put it all back together and filled it up with new fluids to no avail. I have the unit on blocks with the wheels off to troubleshoot. Any thoughts?

Answer
Hello Again Erick:

From your Description it Sounds like the Hydraulic Relief Valve has Stuck Open, the Hydraulic Pump is Bad or the Differential is Damaged. A New or Used Transaxle is your Next Option. For Used Transaxles, You can Use the Site Addys at this Site Addy; http://www.yetmans.mb.ca/antiques.html to Locate Used Parts for this Unit. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.
