Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): broken pull cord, rivets, tiller

The pull cord on my B + S. engine broke. A little bit of it is inside the housing.  
It is on a Craftsman 6.5 HP tiller model # 917.94.482. The housing appears to
be riveted on. How do I get it off and, if I can, how do I replace the cord?

This starter is very close to yours.  In fact, the same company makes the starters for Briggs and Tecumseh.

You will have to remove the housing to repair the starter.  If you decide to replace the starter you can drill or grind out the rivets.
