Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 14.5 briggs model 287707, appropriate boxes, coil pack

Question
I recieved a engine for nothing to install in my simpity mower but I have an extra wire that comes from what looks like a fuel shut off solenoid, one wire goes to a ground and I would assume the other is a power wire. Also a black wire coming from the coil pack to where?the problem is the unit turns over but doesn't start. The unit has spark and fuel to carb.

Answer
Hello Dennis:

The Wire from the Carburetor Solenoid is Supposed to have Current Only when the Ign Switch is Turned On and No Current when the Ign Switch is in the Off Position. This Solenoid Shuts Off the Gas Flow to the Carburtor Jet. Without Current the Engine Does Not get Fuel to Run. The Only Wire to the Coil is a Ground. This Stops the Coil from Firing the Plug and Shuts Off the Engine. It is Usually Connected to the Ign Switch so it is Grounded when the Ign is in the Off Position Only. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine at this Site Addy; http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/manual_and_more/doclist.aspx?categ... and Enter the Model Numbers (XXXXXX) and Type Numbers (XXXX) in the Appropriate Boxes and Click GO. Then Select Download PDF. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
