Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): stx38 transaxel pully, woodruff key, input shaft

Question
John, I just purchased a used 1995 stx38. I do not have it in my possession so I cant give you any #s but it is a yellow deck. I was told by the owner that it has a new carb and he didn't adjust it properly so it barley runs at full throttle. I belive this to be a easy fix. The big ? is the pulley on the transaxle spins freely. I am guessing that it has sheared a woodruff key. But I am unsure of the how the  gear is attached inside the transaxle ie, splines, flat spot on the shaft etc. I am guessing  this is  external t-axle problem and not internal. If it helps the pto works but the mower will not move in any gear.  thanks

Answer
Hello Derek:

You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers (STX38) and Click Find. Then Select your Model from the Search Results Area. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. Select the "Transaxle Gears (Peerless)"  File. Is the Input Shaft of the Transaxle Turning when you Turn the Transaxle Pulley? If No, then the Shaft Key (#56) has Sheared or is Damaged. The Pinion Gear Inside the Transaxle that the Input Shaft Turns is Splined to Match the Splines on the Input Shaft. After you have Taken a Look at the Breakdown and you have Any more Questions, then Please Ask. The Breakdown should Assist you in Locating and Repairing the Cause of your Problem. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
