Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): JD 445 wont start, kawasaki engine, safety switches

Question
QUESTION: JD 445    started, ran for a minute then died. now it turns over but will not start. changed fuel filter and plugs and it seems to be getting gas.it's a 1997 with about 800 hrs. any help what to look for would be helpful. This is a fuel injected twin cylinder kawasaki engine.

ANSWER: Hello Randy:

Spray a Small Amount of Gas Into the Air Horn. Does the Engine Start and Quit? If Yes, then Remove the Fuel Injector and Make Sure it is Pulsing Fuel. If No Fuel from the Injector, then you May have a Bad Sensor or Several Other Possible Causes. If you Wish to Continue the Diagnostics, Let me know and I will Instruct you on How to Proceed. The Diagnostics May take a Few E-Mail. I will have Questions for you and I am Sure you will have More Questions for me as we Continue. Know the Answer to the Injector will Give ma a Better Direction to go for the Diagnostics. Let's Make Sure the Injector is Firing, before I Continue. Thanks.

QUESTION: Hi John, Thanks for the reply. The engine does not start it just turns over. I can see plenty of gas entering the air horn with the air filter off.I checked all the safety switches and they seem to be working properly.I also checked all the fuses and they are good.I probabaly need to check for spark but am not sure of thr proper way to do that. Thanks, Randy

Answer
Hello Again Randy:

Remove the Spark Plug/s and Wrap a Wire Around the Threads of the Spark Plug. Attach the Other End of this Wire to the Engine Block. Now to Check the Ignitor or the Coil, Remove the Shut Off Wire from the Ignitor/Coil and Try to Start the Engine. If the Engine Starts with the Shut Off Wire Disconnected, then a Safety Switch is Bad or a Wire to the Ignitor/Coil is Grounded and is Stopping the Ignitor/Coil from Firing the Plug. If No Fire to the Plug when the Shut Off Wire is Disconnected, then the Ignitor or Coil is Bad. Usually when you have an Ignitor or Ign Module that is Separate from the Coil; the Ignitor/Ign Module is the Most Common Component that Fails. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
