Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere stx38, battery failure, charging system

Question
I have a stx38 riding lawn mower. I have an issue with keeping a battery charged. I have replaced with brand new batteries, but something is draining them dead. I can jump the lawnmower with a car, it will start right up but still not enough power to turn the blades. What do i have to check now?

Answer
Hello Chris:

From your Description it Sounds like the Voltage Regulator or Stator is Bad. If you are Jumping the Mower with the Vehicles Engine Running, then Most Likely the Voltage Regulator has Gotten Fried. Never Jump a Mower from a Running Vehicles Battery as the Vehicles Charging System will Damage the Mowers Charging System. I Suggest you Use the Charts at the Following Site Addy to Check the Stator and Regulator. If the Stator was Bad and Caused the Initial Battery Failure, then Both the Regulator and Stator May Require Replacing. The Charging System Site Addy is; http://www4.briggsandstratton.com/miscpdfs/RNT/alternator_id.pdf . It Does Not Matter if this is a Briggs, Kohler, Kawasaki, or Most Other OEM Engine, the Testing is Basically the Same. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
