Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 14 & 16 hp briggs and stratton motors no spark, carburetor body, briggs and stratton

Question
I was given 2 tractors and neither one of them run now. they ran when he parked them but get no spark now. They are of the 70 era and one is a wizard garden tractor Model #MTD 7620A37 and the briggs and stratton motor model # is 326431-0136-01 and this is the 16 hp motor. The 14 hp is also a MTD I have no model # for this one and the motor is also a briggs and stratton the numbers for this one is 320421-0141-01 the code # is 7105211. Neither one of them have spark what should I look for as the common problem?

Answer
Hello Bob:

1- Engine: 326431-0136; No Fire. This is Usually Caused by Corroded Contacts on the Point Set or a Bad Condenser in the Point Set. On this Model Engine you can Replace the Condenser without Replacing the Point Set. I Suggest you Use a Finger Nail File and Polish the Contacts of the Point Set and Replace the Condenser (B&S #298060). Use a Lint Free Clothe to Clean the Point Set Contacts After you have Polished the Contacts. To Set the Point Set Gap; Turn the Engine While you have a Finger Pushing on the Point Set Plunger. When you Feel the Plunger Move Completely Out, then Set the Point Gap to .020in. You May Also have a Fuel Problem if the Engine has for for a While. I Suggest you Also,  **Remove, Disassemble and Soak the Carburetor Overnight in Carburetor Cleaner (I Use Gunk). I have Found that Most People can Use a Breakdown/IPL and Disassemble the Carburetor Enough for Proper Cleaning. You Only have to Remove the Bowl (if Applicable), Float Pin (if Applicable), Float (if Applicable)  and Needle Valve and Any Adjustment Screws that Go Into the Carburetor Body. The Welch Plugs Do Not have to be Removed. Then Soak the Carburetor Body and Parts in a 1 Gallon Can of Gunk Carburetor Cleaner Overnight. The Can has a Parts Tray Inside it for the Small Parts. Once the Carburetor and Parts are in the Cleaner, you can Replace the Lid for Safety and to Prevent Accidental Spillage. Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air. Install New Parts if Required.** You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Unit at this Site Addy; http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/manual_and_more/doclist.aspx?categ... and Enter the Model Numbers (XXXXXX) and Type Numbers (XXXX) in the Appropriate Boxes and Click GO. Then Select Download PDF. 2- Engine: 320421-0141; No Fire. This Engine has the Same Point Set Configuration as the Other Engine, so the Same Instructions Apply. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
