Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere, Model LX 172 PTO, john deere model, model lx

Question
The PTO won't engage on my John Deere Model LX 172. With the engine running, the switch won't pull out. If you turn the engine off, the switch will pull out. Reading some other posts, I get the feeling that the PTO assembly needs changing. I feel the switch is operating properly; engine runs, safety switch working, etc. Any help?

Answer
Hello Timothy:

Check the Seat Safety Switch. On Some Model JDs the PTO Switch Can Not be Pulled if the Seat Switch is Not Making Good Contact. To Check the PTO; If you have an Ohmmeter, Disconnect the Wiring Harness from the Front of the Clutch and Check the Resistance of the Clutch. You should have around 4 or 5 OHMs. If at or near Zero, the Coil has Shorted. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Find. Then Select your Model from the Search Results Area. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
