Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Valve adjustment, briggs stratton, valve adjustment

I have an 18hp Briggs & Stratton that ran fine until
"one day". The local shop says the valves need adjusted. Would you be able to give me step by step instructions, starting with cylinder head removal. My 16 year old neighbor wants to try this as a project before starting vocational school this fall, taking mechanics. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Since he is wanting to learn how to repair small engines, have you looked on Ebay for a used repair manual?  Part number 271172.

I would higly recommend the manual...this is the best way to get familar with repair manuals and covers all the engine components; valves, carb, timing, governor.
